Vintage Challenge 01 Results: Celebrating Ethiopia’s Young Innovators

After weeks of creativity, teamwork, prototyping, testing, and problem-solving, Vintage Challenge 01: Used Goods Web Marketplace has officially come to an end.

The first Vintage Challenge brought together talented young innovators who took on a real-world technology challenge and transformed their ideas into practical solutions. Throughout the competition, participants had the opportunity to strengthen their problem-solving skills, work collaboratively, build prototypes, and present their solutions.

Most importantly, the challenge created a platform for young people to demonstrate their potential through innovation, technology, creativity, and execution.

Meet the Winners of Vintage Challenge 01

After the final evaluation, we are proud to announce the top performers of the first Vintage Challenge:

🥇 1st Place — Elias Yirga, Computer Science graduate from Bahir Dar University (BDU)

🥈 2nd Place — Yeabsira Tarekegn, third-year Computer Science student at Admas University

🥉 3rd Place — Yasmin Aminu & Rodas Awgichew | Team ROYAS - final-year students of Computer Science and Computer Information Systems, respectively, at Addis Ababa University (AAU)

What Was Vintage Challenge 01 About?

Vintage Challenge 01: Used Goods Web Marketplace was designed around the development of a digital marketplace for buying and selling used goods.

Rather than focusing only on theoretical knowledge or academic qualifications, participants were challenged to build and solve.

They moved through different stages of the innovation process, including:

• Identifying and understanding the problem

• Developing ideas and potential solutions

• Creating prototypes

• Testing and improving their solutions

• Working as individuals and teams

• Presenting their final concepts

This practical approach allowed participants to experience what it takes to transform an idea into a technology-based solution.

Learning Through Building

One of the most important lessons from Vintage Challenge 01 was that innovation does not happen in a single step.

Ideas need to be questioned, tested, improved, and sometimes completely redesigned.

For the participants, the challenge was an opportunity to learn through experience. Every prototype, test, presentation, and piece of feedback became part of the learning process.

This is what makes innovation challenges valuable: participants don't just learn about problem-solving, but they practice it.

Creating Opportunities for Young Innovators in Ethiopia

Ethiopia has a growing community of young people with ideas, technical skills, creativity, and entrepreneurial ambition. However, traditional pathways do not always provide enough opportunities for young talent to demonstrate what they can actually do.

The Vintage Challenge is designed to help bridge that gap.

By creating practical challenges, Vintage Technologies aims to provide young people with opportunities to demonstrate their abilities beyond traditional academic credentials or work experience.

Participants get the chance to build portfolios, develop practical skills, collaborate with other innovators, and gain experience solving real-world problems.

From the first idea to the final presentation, each participant contributed to creating a community focused on learning, building, and innovation.

Winning a competition is one achievement. Having the courage to take on a difficult problem, build something, receive feedback, and keep improving is another.

Vintage Challenge 01 may be finished, but the journey does not stop here.
